....and after listening to the second Inauguration of our president, I , too, am swept up in the accomplishments that have been made...however small the steps, in a very complex society. It is wonderful to be part of the solution, as it becomes more clear what I want, from what I don't want in my community, in my nation, in my world.

Well, here it is a year later, and i am back to my chiropractor again (after a few sessions in the Summer months). And I am here to say...sometimes "a cigar is just a cigar". The shoes I use just as "indoor shoes" I have been wearing alot during the holidays, and it turns out they were turning my legs outward enough to through my whole posture off, causing aches in heals and various parts of my body. I first attributed my aches and pains to the usual holiday stressors and conflicts that come up. But after examining various shoes with my chiropractor, I knew the biggest culprit was the shoes. Yes, holidays bring out many emotions, but sometimes pain can be from just unsupportive shoes!

Comment on What Hypnosis Can Do by clare nicholetti

Yes, that was printed April 16, 2011. I totally agree with one of the points made... using self hypnosis on a regular basis can reduce fear ...and as Dr. David Spiegel (director of the Center on Stress and Health at Stanford U) says, "People think that hypnosis is about giving up control....but it's actually giving control back to the patients."
The article goes on to describe how some individuals use hypnosis to quit smoking, or to alleviate certain medical conditions. There are some impressive studies like the one done in 2000, by radiologists at Harvard Medical School. They found that patients who received hypnosis during surgery required less medication, had fewer complications, and shorter procedures than patients who did not have hypnosis.
The follow up study in 2002 concluded by the radiologists that if every patient undergoing catheterization were to receive hypnosis, the cost savings would amount to $338 per patient.
My own experience with these type of requests from clients are limited in number, but impressive nonetheless. Three out of the four smokers who wanted to stop smoking, and used hypnosis did stop...to this day. One woman asked for hypnosis before breast cancer surgery. It was years ago, and just last year I saw her downtown, and she came over to thank me again.
These are real stories that give one pause...and for me, great joy.
Thanks for reminding me!

Yes, definitely!....our dreams not only give clues, Patrise, but they let us know what's important to us, in case we missed it during our waking hours. It just takes time to allow for the messages to get through to our conscious mind. Sometimes we can do it on our own, but often it helps to talk it out with a person that you can trust.

dreams are such an amazing resource! I often get profound symbolic information from the stories that play out in the night.

I also think our dreams give clues to how our minds work, individually. For instance, I always dream of elaborate detailed architectural spaces and cities I've never been to!

Well put. No one and no group of people should feel they have to hide their own authentic experience. The judgement comes to me, when I consider the behavior of that individual (or myself, for that matter), as constructive or destructive in it's context.

So glad you are shining a light on this issue. Ignorance, denial, and secrecy work against the very mental and emotional health that psychiatry is meant to promote. Keep up the good work!

Our mind is constantly running stories, beliefs, and messages , whether we are aware of them or not. It's the ones that we are not aware of that can lead us into mindless activity, defenses, and behavior we don't want. As we continue to be aware of our environment, as well as ourselves, we avoid falling into that black hole that leaves us in despair, anger, and depression. We are then left with looking at the bigger picture. "..what's this all about, and what is my role on this planet?" I believe that no matter what occupation we have, our "job" is to learn as much as we can about ourselves and others, to prepare us for our next level of consciousness (in this life or the next), which can be without pain/suffering, and with much more joy and peace! Our souls are eternal, after all!
